Basquiat Café #4: ‘Basquiat x Heerlen’
9 May 2019 @ 20:00 - 23:00
In collaboration with SCHUNCK, pop venue NEW NOR organizes Basquiat Café during the exhibition “Basquiat, The Artist and His New York Scene” every second Thursday of the month. This series of four free café evenings, through an exhibition, lectures, music and poetry slam, delve deeper into different aspects of the life and work of this iconic artist every night. During the fourth – and last – edition on Thursday 9 May we will conclude with the Basquiat x Heerlen theme and look at the past, present and future. Language: Dutch.
Lecture: Maurice Hermans
During the last edition of Basquiat Café, urban sociologist Maurice Hermans, author of “De Antistad“, elaborates on the link between Heerlen and Basquiat. What are the similarities and differences between New York of the 1980s at the time of Basquiat and Heerlen from the same period? Hermans discusses the similarities and differences between Basquiat and Heerlen, and what the connection is between Basquiat and Heerlen today. He also asked the question: what does the future of our city look like?
music: “Inspired by” (sneak preview)
“Inspired by” is an interdisciplinary project in which young makers within the performing arts react to each other and the arrival of Basquait in Heerlen. Inspired by the exhibition “Basquiat, The Artist and His New York Scene”, initiator and musician Brendan Gijzen went i.s.m. Subp Yao and Gino Bombrini set to work in the studio to create a musical response to a number of works by the grandmaster. The music pieces that come together in an EP are then passed on to choreographer Mami Izumi, HFC Dancestudio and visual artist Ruben Bass. Together they will work under the guidance of Nina Willems in a short creation process to a final presentation in June. During Basquiat Café, initiator Brendan Gijzen already gives a small sneak preview.
music: “The Afgrond On Tour” with Marco Smeets
De Afgrond has been reporting since 2004 about culture, music and life itself in Parkstad Limburg. And because this edition is all about Heerlen, we invite DJ Marco Smeets to take you through “De Afgrond On Tour” through 4 decades of Heerlen pop music. Do you want to enjoy the music of The Nato Partners or the craziness of the Sufgerukte Wallies again? Then Basquiat Café is the place to be.
poetry slam: Martje Weijers
Poetry slam collective Borderlines presents this edition Martje Wijers (1986). Martje writes poems, performs and slams, and was in the finals of the Dutch Poetry Slam Championship in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Last year she achieved a second place there after a final battle that was described by jury member Tom Lanoye as “the battle of the glorious bitches”.
